East River
Legal Services (ERLS) is a private, non-profit corporation
that provides FREE legal assistance to low income persons in
33 counties in eastern South Dakota. The
Service Area link to the left lists the counties that
are served by ERLS.
ERLS screens applicants to be sure that they are qualified for
services both by their income and resources and by the kind
of legal problem they have. Anyone who meets both
qualifications is eligible for services. (Persons 60 years
of age or over DO NOT have to meet income qualifications.)
Services are provided by our staff attorneys in Sioux Falls
and by private attorneys throughout the 33 county area.
These services are free to an accepted client. However, a
client may be asked to pay certain costs such as filing
fees, service fees, cost of obtaining records or expert
witness fees. The
